Elon Musk and Donald Trump Just Fired the Nuclear Safety Team—What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

In today’s episode of What Fresh Hell is This?, Elon Musk and Donald Trump have teamed up for a spectacular display of brain-cell deficiency by firing the people in charge of making sure the world doesn’t accidentally explode. Yes, they’ve gutted the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the lot responsible for keeping America’s nukes from going rogue.
Why? Because apparently, Musk thinks government agencies should be run like one of his half-baked tech startups, and Trump just enjoys firing people—it’s basically his only skill. The result? Chaos, confusion, and the potential for a very bad day if someone presses the wrong button.
Now, being from the UK, we usually watch US politics like a bad reality TV show—appalled but unable to look away. But this one feels a bit too close for comfort. After all, we share a ‘special relationship’ with the Yanks, which, in nuclear terms, means our missiles are basically on a lease from Uncle Sam. So, when the people making sure they don’t randomly detonate get chucked out, we have every right to panic.
Of course, Musk probably thought he could fix everything with some AI chatbot and a dodgy app. Maybe he expected ChatGPT to take over nuclear safety with prompts like, “Hey, AI overlord, how do I prevent a catastrophic chain reaction?” Meanwhile, Trump was probably more concerned about whether the nukes had a Trump Tower sticker on them.
But don’t worry! Once they realised they’d just sacked all the nuclear experts, they tried to re-hire them. The only problem? They’d already locked everyone out of their government emails, and let’s be honest—if someone randomly fired you for no reason, would you be rushing back to help?
The bottom line: America’s nukes are now under the watchful eye of a bunch of confused interns and a CEO who once launched a car into space for fun. If this is the future, I’d like a refund.
TL;DR: America just let Elon Musk and Donald Trump play Jenga with nuclear safety, and the UK might want to start digging some bunkers.
